Why I went into the lumber business

And what this means for the "starving artist".

So I watched an Alex Hormozi video the other day.

And he talked about the three kinds of people who go into business.

  1. The artists

  2. The artist-entrepreneurs

  3. The entrepreneurs

The artists ONLY want to create.

The last thing they want to think about is “selling" their art or making money.

They’re happy living a simple life painting on the beach in Mexico.

The artist entrepreneurs also love to create…

But they want to make money in a way that feels authentic to them.

Then, there’s the entrepreneurs.

They only want to make money.

They don’t care what business they’re in.

Personally, I fall into category number 2.

I LOVE creating more than anything…

but I also want an abundant lifestyle.

To be free. (Financial, locational, time, etc.)

And since I love creating from a place of authenticity…

I never want to end up in a place where I NEED to create to survive.

This is exactly how the “struggling artist” is born…

You either

a) “Sell out” and make things you know will advance your career… or

b) Stay true to yourself, make art you LOVE, and eat shit for years for a slim chance of “making it” and living the life you want.

I knew there had to be a better way.

Hear me out…

I’ve been using an app called Forest.

You plant a tree in your forest every time you stay focused.

So think of creating like planting seeds…

It’s effortless because you love what you do.

Now think of the dirty work (that isn’t fun) like watering your forest.

These are tasks like editing, networking, engaging, “business-e” stuff, etc. that you can’t directly see the benefit of.

But you know your forest will die without it.

Now think of learning skills like marketing, branding, social media, or copywriting as tools…

You use them to harvest your forest and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

But if you own these tools (aka learn the skills),

you can use them to help other creators harvest their forests.

Coaches, creators, brands, they're busy…

They’re spending way too much time planting and watering their seeds and don’t have time to harvest.

That’s where you come in…

If you help them harvest their forest with your tools (AKA SKILLS),

they have NO problem sharing the harvest (aka PROFITS).

You’re taking time off their hands so they can keep planting seeds –

which is ultimately what they love to do and what grows their forest.

PLUS (and this is the best part) –

you’re getting REAL experience harvesting forests.

This will help you tremendously when it comes time to harvest your own…

because this whole time you’re still planting your seeds.

…are you catching my drift?

This is all online business really is.

You can start living the life you want NOW by learning these skills.

And no matter what you’re doing,

you’re in the Lumber business.

You’re no longer in two different industries…

(like marine biology and forestry which have no correlation).

You’re helping them solve their problems at a BIGGER scale which is preparing you to harvest your own forest when the time is right.

And THIS is the path I found in the last few months.

It’s allowed me to start doing the things I love like

  • Traveling

  • Creating

  • Making money

  • Having complete control over my time, location, and life.

And I KNOW it’s just a matter of time until everything comes together to give me ultimate creative freedom.

So if you’re an artist that feels stuck living two different lives…

Think:

What skill can I learn NOW and trade for money that will also help me with my art down the line?

Bam.

You’re in the lumber business.

Welcome, Jack.
